My name is Mrs. Wiedewitsch, Mrs. W, for short.  I have been the School Counselor at CMS for the past seventeen years.  This will be my 24th year in education.  I was a eighth grade science and language arts teacher for the first five years at Ohio County. I am married to Mark with two children Abi a 11th grader at CHS and Ryan a junior at WKU.  We also have 2 cats (Sneaky and Stripes) and a dog( Samson) at home.

During this time with your children at home it is important to remember that they may be anxious, worried and upset.  Answer as many questions as you can, that are age appropriate, and try to keep them calm and not feed off the fear of the unknown.  Our teachers and staff can be reached by email and phone. Please reach out if you need help with assignments, food, school supplies, personal hygiene items.  I know the days can get long with the kids at home.  This would be a good time to read or practice basic math facts.  I have included some good websites to help keep them in learning mode.  If there is anything we can do please reach out to us.

Outbreaks can be stressful

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Coping with stress will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger.

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Worsening of mental health conditions
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations

How you respond to the outbreak can depend on your background, the things that make you different from other people, and the community you live in.

People who may respond more strongly to the stress of a crisis include

  • Older people and people with chronic diseases who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19
  • Children and teens
  • People who are helping with the response to COVID-19, like doctors, other health care providers, and first responders
  • People who have mental health conditions including problems with substance use

Take care of yourself and your community

Taking care of yourself, your friends, and your family can help you cope with stress. Helping others cope with their stress can also make your community stronger.

Ways to cope with stress





The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Move beyond "fine" and "nothing" by asking your child to describe his world. It's also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Try one of these conversation-starters:

  1. Tell me about the best part of your day.

  2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

  3. Did any of your classmates do anything funny?

  4. Tell me about what you read in class.

  5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?

  6. Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?

  7. What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?

  8. What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think they're fair?

  9. Who did you sit with at lunch?

  10. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?
