CIS students required to have Hepatitis A vaccine

Campbellsville Independent Schools’ students will be required to have the Hepatitis A vaccination before starting school next month.

New regulations include one age-specific immunization requirement for the 2018-2019 school year.

All students are required to have a current certificate of immunization status to attend a public school such as Campbellsville Independent Schools.

Specifically, students in kindergarten through their senior year of high school will be required to have two doses of the Hepatitis A vaccine.

Also, students age 16 and older must receive two doses of meningococcal ACWY vaccine to attend school. If the first dose was received at age 16 or older, the second does is not required.

Children with Hepatitis A, which is a liver disease, often don’t have symptoms. They can pass the disease along to others, however, including their unvaccinated parents or caregivers. Those individuals can get very sick.

The Hepatitis A shot protects a child from the disease and can keep the student from missing school.

For more information about the vaccine, contact the Taylor County Health Department, located at 1880 N. Bypass in Campbellsville, at (270) 465-4191.
