CES preschool students learn about animals

Campbellsville Elementary School preschool students are learning about animals that hibernate.

In Julie Shelton’s class, students are learning about penguins, polar bears and more.

In their discussion, students asked how some animals can stay outside when it’s cold.

Shelton told her students that while some animals have fur, others also have blubber, which is a fat layer between skin and muscle that also keeps them warm.

To see first-hand how blubber can keep an animal warm, students performed an experiment.

Students first put their hands in a bowl of ice water. Then, they placed their hands in a bag containing blubber, before putting the bag inside the bowl.

When finished, the students said the blubber kept their hands warm while under the icy water.
