CMS students win at Governor’s Cup competition

Campbellsville Middle School academic team competed at district Governor’s Cup on Saturday, Jan. 21, and brought home several awards.

 

As a result, seven students will advance to region competition.

 

At Governor’s Cup competition, teams compete in on-demand writing, quick recall, future problem solving and five written exams, including math, science, social studies, language arts and arts and humanities.

 

In its district, Campbellsville Middle School competes against Adair, Green and Taylor counties.

 

CMS eighth-grader John Orberson received first place in math.

 

Kaylyn Smith, a seventh-grader, finished second in writing composition.

 

Seventh-grader Peyton Dabney was third in social studies, and classmate Bailey Stearman was fourth.

 

Abi Wiedewitsch, an eighth-grader, received fourth place in math.

 

Seventh-grader Riley Rainwater finished fourth in arts and humanities.

 

And eighth-grader Haley Lopez received fifth place in science.

 

They will all advance to region competition.

 

As a whole, the CMS team received the Katherine C. Hume sportsmanship award.

 

CMS also competed in quick recall and future problem solving.

 

Region academic team competition will be on Monday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Feb. 4, at Monroe County Middle School.

 

At region competition, CMS will compete against Adair, Green, Taylor, Clinton, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Monroe, Casey, Russell and Wayne counties, Somerset Christian School, Meece Middle School, Northern Middle School, Science Hill Elementary School and Southern Middle School.

 

At that competition, the top two future problem solving teams and top five test-takers in each subject will advance to the state competition.

 

State competition will be March 11-13 at the Galt House in Louisville.

 

Steven Gumm sponsors the CMS academic team, which is made up of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.
