CHS seniors meet with U.S. representative

Campbellsville High School senior computer science students recently met with a United States representative to discuss their studies.

U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., visited CHS on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Comer honored CHS seniors Christian Berry and Austin Fitzgerald, who won the First District 2017 Congressional App Challenge.

Berry and Fitzgerald have been invited to visit Washington, D.C., and their winning app, which is called Balls vs. Aliens and Spikes, will be displayed at the Capitol for a year.

While at CHS, Comer met with Fitzgerald and his fellow AP computer science classmates to talk about the app and future in the technology field. Berry was unable to attend the meeting.

Comer presented Fitzgerald a certificate in honor of winning the competition, and Berry will also receive a certificate.

CHS seniors Hye Su Cho and Eujin “Sydney” Jeong, who also competed in the app challenge, were presented with participation certificates.

Cho and Jeong are exchange students from South Korea.

In meeting with CHS students, Coomer congratulated them on their success and encouraged them to continue to work hard in their studies.

Coomer said computer sciences is a growing field, and one with many job openings.

He told the CHS students that they are setting a great example for their classmates and students at high schools around Kentucky.

Comer encouraged the students to always pursue their interests and work toward success.

According to a news release, the Congressional App Challenge was created to help promote interest in STEM skills, which are abilities that are imminently important to the future of the United States.

The competition is open to high school students across the First District.

Berry and Fitzgerald completed their entry for the competition as part of a class project.
